Back in the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed to arrange a place to stay after getting there, however upon reaching the city, a big convention was in town and every single backpackers hostels and affordable lodging were fully booked.

Hailing from Singapore, I thought maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – only to discover the local airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate 24 hours. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I hopped on a bus into town and started wandering near the casino, reasoning I could pass those hours somewhere that was open through the night. Admittedly, this plan in the best shape to succeed at a crucial interview the next day, however, being a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.

We could all use more individuals with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared lost since a female student noticed me wandering around the city center and asked whether I needed help. I shared my situation and right away she suggested I could sleep on the floor at her university residence at ANU – an ideal turn of events, as that’s where my interview was the following day. She went further by offering a meal: one sandwiches she had taken home her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location and secure for the evening.

Looking back, I can appreciate the significant risk she accepted as a woman allowing a male stranger who was a complete stranger stay in her room. In those days I existed within my male privilege bubble and was oblivious to such safety concerns. As a dad now, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain very grateful.

I never did go to that university, and I never saw the student afterwards, but I’ve never forgotten her amazing act of generosity. My sincere desire is that the universe has repaid her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more individuals with such compassion.
