China Punishes High-Profile Myanmar Scam Mafia Leaders to Capital Punishment
One Chinese court has handed down death sentences to several prominent figures of a notorious Burmese mafia to execution as Beijing persists in its campaign on scam activities in the region.
Overall, 21 clan figures and partners were convicted of scams, homicide, injury and other crimes, reported a official report published on the judicial website.
This clan is among a small number of organized crime groups that rose to power in the early 2000s and transformed the impoverished isolated region of Laukkaing into a profitable hub of casinos and red-light districts.
In recent years they pivoted to fraudulent schemes in which thousands of illegally moved people, many of them from China, are trapped, mistreated and obligated to defraud others in unlawful activities estimated at billions.
