Forecasters are reporting an icy start to the new year, with wintry precipitation anticipated throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers have been told to dress warmly as near-freezing temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Celebratory Events Go Ahead In Spite of Warnings

Edinburgh's renowned Hogmanay festivities are expected to take place, following last year's calling-off. This proceeds amid weather alerts for snow in northern Scotland.

"A chilly New Year's Eve night for those out celebrating, so extra layers will be necessary," noted the weather service.

Heading into Friday, advisories are active for Northern Ireland and from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and the majority of the south-east of England.

Readings Set to Fall Further

About 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Warnings Issued

Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with readings forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

Authorities said this meant the weather could to trigger major effects across medical and care provision. This encompasses a potential rise in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those aged 65 or over.
