New York Unveils Portal for Residents to Submit ICE Images Following Detentions of 4 US Citizens

The state AG has introduced a new digital platform urging locals to provide images and footage of immigration raids across the state. This action follows a day after a high-profile immigration operation disrupted Chinatown in Manhattan, sparking mass outcry.

US Citizens Detained In ICE Operation

A lawmaker announced during a news conference that four US citizens were arrested and kept for "almost a full day" after the enforcement action. Protests occurred in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

"All New York residents deserves to live without fear," the AG stated in a release.

"Anyone who observed and recorded federal operations yesterday, I urge you to share that footage with the authorities. We are committed to reviewing these submissions and evaluating any legal breaches."

Submission Process

The portal provides fields to upload images and video footage of the raid, along with a field to note location information. Before submitting, users must check a box that states that "the attorney general might employ any documents, photographs, or videos in a official report, including in a court case or official statement."

Details of the Manhattan Operation

The Chinatown raid, which onlookers say involved over fifty government officers, took place in a well-known district of NYC where counterfeit purses, items, goods and other goods are regularly available en masse – often to tourists.

Footage of the operation reveal several hooded and equipped officers securing and holding a man, and pushing back witnesses. Masses of locals trailed the agents down the sidewalks. An armored military vehicle was observed moving along the city streets.

Official Reactions

In a midweek briefing featuring the rights organization, Representative Goldman, a Democratic representative, stated that four US citizens were detained by ICE for about 24 hours and that there were "no conditions where nationals should be taken for no reason." He noted the individuals were freed on Wednesday with no charges filed.

"The intent is obvious here. It is not about removing offenders," Goldman said. "This represents a militarized effort to create conflict. It is merely a pretext to generate turmoil for federal officials to bring in the armed forces to halt violence that they themselves caused."

Broad Criticism

Anger over the federal action quickly spread – all three political contenders denounced the incident, along with Governor Kathy Hochul.

"Repeatedly, the federal government opts for authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It must stop," one mayoral candidate declared.

New York City advocacy organizations spoke out too.

"ICE targeted Chinatown in NYC with armored transports, masked agents and riot gear to go after street vendors attempting to earn income. This operation had no relation to community security and focused completely on frightening communities and areas," said the leader of a rights organization.

Official Guidelines

ICE policy prohibits the holding of citizens and the agency has stated it does not take into custody citizens. However, investigative journalism has found that over 170 citizens have been held against their will by federal agents since the beginning of the current administration.

Recent Pattern

ICE raids have been rising in frequency in the state and nationwide recently.

An October operation in central NYC was the first known raid on an housing center of the present government. Rallies against ICE are commonplace as are claims of violence and abusive practices.

Recently, a submission submitted by civil rights groups claimed medical neglect of pregnant women in government custody.
