The Former French President Set to Write Jail Diary Chronicling Two Dozen Days In Custody

Nicolas Sarkozy plans a personal account next month titled Notes from a Cell, chronicling his experience spent behind bars.

The announcement was made shortly following the ex-leader left prison while he appeals his conviction for illegal collaboration regarding a scheme to acquire political financing from the government of Muammar Gaddafi.

Life Behind Bars: Personal Reflections

“In prison there is nothing to see, and activities are scarce,” he writes in one passage, implying the memoir is more about his reflections while in seclusion as opposed to a broader observation on the strained and struggling jail system in France.

“I forget silence, which is missing in that facility, where there is constant sound,” he states. “The noise unfortunately never stops. However, akin to empty spaces, personal reflection is fortified behind bars.”

Freedom Plea: Sharing the Struggle

During his plea for freedom, he was present by video link from his cell, depicting prison life as draining. He had told the court: “I must acknowledge those working in the jail, showing great humanity, and who have made this ordeal manageable – as it truly is one.”

“I didn’t expect that in my seventies, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal that has been imposed on me. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, extremely tough. It has an impact all who experience it due to its intensity.”

Historical Context

The former president, the ex-head of state between 2007 and 2012, was the first past president from the EU and the first leader since WWII in the French Republic to be incarcerated.

Ahead of his incarceration he declared he planned to utilize the opportunity to write a book.

Unconfirmed is did he manage to review and analyze the three books he brought with him: a two-volume biography of Jesus together with Dumas’s work the famous story, a plot where an innocent man is imprisoned later flees to seek vengeance.

Life in Confinement

The former leader remained in solitary confinement due to safety concerns in a space approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at the correctional facility in Paris. Guards occupied an adjacent room.

It was stated his diet consisted just yogurt during his stay because he feared any food might have been spat on. Options were available to cook for himself yet he declined, based on unnamed sources. Not known is whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.

Defense Viewpoint

His attorney, Christophe Ingrain every day throughout the jail term, informed the court his safety would improve released compared to inside. “He has faced death threats, has heard screaming during nighttime and the urgent intervention next door during an inmate’s self-injury.”

Legal Proceedings

Sarkozy went to prison on 21 October after a Paris court imposed a five-year sentence on conspiracy charges related to a plan to acquire election financing for his presidential bid.

He maintains his innocence challenging the decision, and another court case set for the coming spring.
