The Mighty Nein's Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Critical Role Song
This latest animated series, the newest animated series from the beloved role-playing group, unveiled an exciting introductory sequence. It features the beloved cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues fighting hard and taking names, while also hinting at multiple heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the opening appears amazing. But I couldn't help feeling that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition composed by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one released by the production company's record label Scanlan Shorthalt Music. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I suspect that devotees of the sequel series will love its presence.
Personally, The Mighty Nein's intro fails to capture the excitement and excitement that was part of the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", written by singer-songwriter the artist, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in 2018.
Including singing from one actress, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as Riegel himself, the song was catchy and enjoyable. Back then, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's opening with "the new song" doesn't strike the same chords in my opinion. It's an impressive piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its tone is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some surprises and differences from the actual-play campaign. A tonal change for its opening seems to be one of them.
This animated adventure will be available to watch on the streaming service from Nov. 19. For those eager until then, or want a head start to learn about the characters of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on Spotify and YouTube.
