The network's Top Fresh Series of This Year Secures a Substantial Extension for Seasons 2 and 3.
Last October, Adult Swim welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the channel unveiled a fresh animated series with a distinctly unique feel. Haha, You Clowns proved to be sweet and soothing, in the spirit of a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. In an era often defined by dark humor, this show's sincerity found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been picked up for two additional seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the world of the Campbell family. The show centers on three respectful teenage brothers whose primary trait is their profound affection for their widowed father, with Cappa portraying for all four main characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the fans of the show who welcomed the series and shared it with others," remarked Cappa. "It's thrilling that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
The official statement also included commendation from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who called the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who discovered the show and championed its peculiarly charming appeal.
"All of you supported this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," noted Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
Upon its debut, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a wholesome alternative" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something surprisingly comfy about following this lovable family navigate their daily lives.
Previously, creator Joe Cappa stated his desire to evolve comedy past its prevailing layer of irony. He traced this trend to various cultural shifts.
“We're stuck in a cycle of irony that we are trapped in,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. The genre needs to change.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa has the opportunity to help usher in that change he described. Or at the very least, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to enjoy the warm glow of the beloved Campbell clan.
The final episode of Season 1 of Haha, You Clowns is scheduled to air on December 21st. All episodes is ready to watch on HBO Max.
