When an teenage makes Real Madrid history in a key European tie against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and the spotlight.

During his first start in the competition - and fifth appearance for the team - the young midfielder suitably impressed as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 last-16 first-leg advantage at the Bernabeu.

The young player, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Benfica, then helped the Madrid side defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to confirm a last eight place.

Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch became the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League knockout stages, beating star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.

Rapid Ascent Through La Fabrica

The midfielder is the most recent to emerge from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of Alvaro Arbeloa's most exciting protegees.

He signed for Madrid from Leganes in 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the under-19 side, where he quickly made a positive impact.

He worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they faced the academy's first team, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who replaced the previous coach in January.

Reports would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the energy, character and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Remains His Character'

During the pre-season of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up the youngster to practice with the first team and awarded him playing time in pre-season.

However, it was the change in manager that proved the defining moment in his development as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in each leg against the Portuguese side that set up the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I started playing football, every day you go to train and each day you play a match," said the player after his debut.

"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after arriving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Jude Bellingham and Ceballos created an opportunity.

Pitarch has seized it with displays that have defied his age and inexperience.

"He's a very quick footballer, and you can see what he's capable of," said Arbeloa. "He is incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, effort and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His greatest quality is his character," added he. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.

"I realize people are astonished to see him start in a European fixture, but he is selected because I had complete trust in him to do his normal game.

"He will continue to get opportunities with the first team. It is delightful to coach a player like him."

A Future International Decision

Born in a Madrid suburb, in the Madrid region, and grew up fully immersed in the local game, progressing through youth setups before entering Real Madrid's famous La Fabrica system.

He possesses both Spanish and Moroccan nationality, offering him the choice to represent both nations at the highest level.

According to international regulations, players may represent different countries at junior level without being locked in, with the final decision only final once they play in a official full international.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the U19 and U20 teams, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.

Despite this, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are monitoring his rise with interest.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is positive with Spain, but I will reach a decision soon."

This scenario mirrors that of other dual nationality players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas teenage Yamal opted for Spain, Diaz decided to play for Morocco.

Eyes on the Prize

For now, his attention is on establishing himself in the Real side and repaying his manager's belief.

He featured for over an hour in the 2-1 victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight tie with the German champions.

He was replaced by another academy player in Manuel Angel underscored the coach's confidence in the next generation to aid the club chase future success.

Following his impressive impact so far on the Champions League, the midfielder is expected to play a key role in that.

"Arbeloa treats me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my playing time on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
