This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Spared by Miami-Dade Leader.
It might not have been at the equivalent scale as sparing festive fowl, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ceremoniously saving the life of a pig named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the core of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. Her criminal record is spotless,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the sheer volume of pardons issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating six or seven apples per day,” Levine Cava continued. “I hope she experiences a long and happy life free from concern.”
The gathering, either celebrating or rejecting the region’s Hispanic tradition of eating roast pork during the holidays, was founded to emulate the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The animal, contributed by a local firefighter, was named for the current slang trend of young people exclaiming “six-seven” – inspired by a rap song lyric – often for no discernable reason. The trend became so widespread that a major dictionary recently named “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now destined to live out its days at a rural sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the organizers' announcement.
“The annual pig pardon has become one of our favorite ways to kick off the festive period,” said Eric Castellanos, in a particularly upbeat message.
“It embodies the character of Miami: vibrant, varied, and based in heritage that unite the community. Every time, we are honored to observe tradition and kindness in a way unique to Miami.”
Attendees enjoyed a meat-free selection of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they celebrated the pig's pardon.
