A large-scale search and recovery effort is currently in progress in the Caribbean Sea for two lost boats transporting humanitarian supplies journeying from Mexico to Cuba.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Launched

The Mexican government has sent naval teams and reconnaissance aircraft to find the two vessels, which were had on board at least nine total sailors, per a official statement.

The boats had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on the early part of the week, but there has been a complete lack of contact from them and zero verification of their arrival, authorities reported.

Background of Humanitarian Support to the Nation

Cuba has depended significantly on Mexico's over the last several weeks, as the island struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"Both crews and captains are experienced sailors, and each boat are outfitted with proper navigational gear and emergency beacons," a representative for the convoy stated.

The nine crew members are citizens of France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexico said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from those nations along with their diplomatic representatives.

"The group is co-operating fully with the officials and are still optimistic in the ability of the crews to reach Havana safely," the official further stated.

Earlier Aid Delivery

Just days before, the Cuban government warmly welcomed and greeted with fanfare a different ship that had carried 14 tons of donated goods to the nation.

That vessel, called "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which the revolutionary leader came back to Cuba to start the armed struggle in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, drugs, baby formula, cycles and foodstuffs.

Broader Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led attempts to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba beginning in January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the country came into effect.

Global bodies have since warned of ""critical" lack of essential goods, with over 50,000 operations called off in Cuba due to power shortages.

Diplomatic measures have increased over the past months, with statements from several representatives emphasizing the delicate state of relations.

Responding to recent comments, a high-ranking government figure stated firmly that "the governance model of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Reports suggest that preliminary steps of discussions had begun, although their ongoing development remains not publicly known.

The naval forces said it was dedicated to using every available asset at its command to discover the boats and secure the safety of the sailors.

At this time, there has been no official comment on the missing boats by the government in Havana.
