Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the Australian Open, which kicks off on the 18th of January in Melbourne.

A Landmark Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a remarkable 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before exiting in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Venus had previously revealed in November her intention to play in Auckland, New Zealand, where she was likewise awarded a special entry, a fortnight before the Melbourne event.
